An occasional series about things that are useful….. or not

Chilly’s 750ml water bottle

We bought this before we came away thinking it would be good for cool, refreshing drinks on our walks. It keeps liquids cool or hot well enough BUT it is about the size, shape and weight of a 40mm cannon shell and is determined to fall from an upright position as soon and as often as it can (hence the already battered top). So we did not take it on our walk yesterday and instead took a small plastic bottle….

The cannon shell

It was a walk of 10 miles (found via a tourist office app and rated ‘easy’) that any SAS recruitment officer would be glad to set his men, along wooded paths of varying gradients and stunning hilltop views across the Lot valley.

Having left the cannon shell behind, we really hadn’t taken enough water with us for the conditions, so accosted a French man relaxing in his garden who obligingly topped up our Waitrose bottle, commenting ‘how hot it is today’ as he did so, as his dog, panting in a shady corner, viewed us with compassion. No doubt it gave a Gallic shrug of its shoulders as we set off once more up the steepest gradient yet. And, just like a squaddie, when we got back Joe drank all the beer (Pelforth brune) he had promised himself he would not touch until the weekend, so all ended well 8/10.

No Pelforth brune until our next shopping trip

  1. Wow! The photos are stunning and it sounds as though you are having a great time, less the SAS workout! It is a beautiful location and great that you have been able to interact with the locals too. It may have been delayed but all your planning and hard work has paid off. Enjoy the rest of your stay.
